Marketing Communications Writer

 

 

The University of St. Thomas (www.stthom.edu), a private Catholic university located in Houston, Texas, committed to the liberal arts and to the religious and intellectual tradition of a Catholic higher education, is seeking a Marketing Communications Writer. The University enrolls more than 3,700 students with its main campus located in Houston's Museum District.  This position reports directly to the Director of Communications in the Marketing and University Relations Division.

 

Summary:

 

This position is responsible for developing and writing materials including, but not limited to, publications, news articles, news releases, newsletters, e-newsletters, website content for online newsroom and other Web content areas maintained by Marketing Communications. This position also writes for the Encounter Magazine and serves on the magazine editorial team. The Marketing Communications Writer position develops, writes, and disseminates stories about university research, academics, activities, events and awards. In addition, this position assists the Director of Communication in planning and implementing media relations, marketing and communications plans to promote a positive image and to help achieve recruitment objectives. 

 

Job Description:

  • Identifies, researches and independently writes feature articles, news releases, story briefs, newsletter articles for internal and external communication
  • Serves on the Encounter magazine writing and editorial team and is given various writing assignments.
  • Orchestrates photo needs to accompany stories
  • Posts stories to Presspage and utilizes SEO techniques
  • Produce video clips to accompany written stories and press releases
  • Compiles a monthly project update report to measure progress
  • Coordinates the selection of faculty experts with media requests
  • Helps maintain media lists
  • Utilizes Meltwater monitoring tool for news release distribution and measurement
  • Writes and distributes press releases (if requested)
  • Disseminate society press releases after big university events
  • Sends Catholic news releases on Catholic online (if requested)
  • Sends Chancery notices
  • Maintains faculty experts list and profiles (if requested)
  • Manages and edits Newsworthy e-newsletter (if requested)
  • Assists in Emergency communications when requested.
  • Attends special events and university functions on a regular basis in order to write and prepare articles and other written material about the event.
  • Handles special projects and other job-related projects as assigned
  • Serves as backup to social media specialist
  • Serves as backup to posting master calendar listings

 

Skill Requirements:

 

  • Knowledge of marketing, e-marketing and public/media relations
  • Demonstrates proficiency in writing stories, text, and articles with proper grammar, formatting, and spelling.
  • Knowledge of AP style
  • Excellent interviewing, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of editorial procedures including strong command of the English language and proven skills in editing, copy editing and proofreading
  • Organize, prioritize and manage multiple projects in a deadline driven environment with extreme attention to detail
  • Working knowledge of major social media platforms

 

Experience and Education

 

Bachelor's degree in Communication or Journalism required.

Minimum two years' experience in public affairs or marketing communications related field.

Comprehensive experience writing articles, press releases, and stories for general publication.

Prior work experience in higher education a plus.
