The University of St. Thomas (, a private Catholic university, located in Houston, Texas, is committed to the liberal arts and to the religious and intellectual traditions of Catholic higher education, is seeking a Financial Aid Counselor.


Advise students and families regarding availability of scholarships and financial aid at the university. Manage state grant programs, including awarding, monitoring allocation, requesting funds, and reconciliation.  Work with IT to complete state reporting. Perform federal verification process for FAFSA applications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Administration of the Texas Equalization Grant program and other state funded programs
  • Import ISIR records into PeopleSoft and export ISIR corrections
  • Manage Federal and State Work Study funds to ensure eligible students work and are able to utilize our allocations.
  • Post outside scholarships as they are received and repackage students as needed.
  • Process and compile missing information letters to students with incomplete files
  • Counsel students and their families regarding financial aid eligibility, assistance programs available, and their rights and responsibilities associated with those programs
  • Utilize & process professional judgment to evaluate changed circumstances
  • Assist with the distribution of information on various financial aid programs available to students; conduct financial aid presentations on campus and in the community
  • Provide support to the other financial aid professionals and promote a cross-trained student-centered atmosphere
  • Work cooperatively with other university offices to efficiently and effectively meet the needs of students and families
  • Work with other professional staff in counseling students and applicants with the financial aid process
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education, work experience, and knowledge required:

  • ¬†Undergraduate Bachelor's degree required. Master's level preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years prior financial aid work experience required
  • Thorough working knowledge of the financial aid application process and various federal and state financial aid programs required.
  • Familiarity of current issues effecting the financial aid and scholarship profession
  • Demonstrated exceptional mathematical ability and working with numbers
  • Strong orientation to customer service and demonstrated public relations skills

 Working conditions:

  • May occasionally be required to work weekend/evening hours (during peak periods).
  • Significant amounts of direct personal, phone, and electronic interaction with others.
  • When workload demands, individuals will be expected to work the necessary hours to get the job done.
  • Physical capabilities for normal office environment required.
  • Very limited travel.
  • Non-smoking environment
