Part-Time Circulation Desk Supervisor Doherty Library

The University of St. Thomas (UST), a private Catholic University committed to the liberal arts and the religious and intellectual tradition of Catholic higher education, located in Houston, Texas, near the vibrant central business district, Texas Medical Center, and museum district, is inviting applications for a part-time Circulation Desk Supervisor in the main campus Doherty Library.  This position reports directly to the Head of Circulation.

            Summary:

The part-time Circulation Desk Supervisor is responsible for managing and supervising the circulation desk, the security desk, and the book stacks.

 

Essential duties and responsibilities:

 

  • . Responsible for the timely and proper closing and/or opening of the library
  • Ensure all patrons either scan or sign in upon entrance at the library
  • Ensure the efficient circulation of library materials
  • Ensure accuracy of the student worker timesheets
  • Supervise the circulation and security desks and library computer lab
  • Supervise stack maintenance and general upkeep of the library
  • Enter and remove comments, fees, blocks, account holds and other information stored on University databases related to library patron circulation records
  • Collect fines
  • Handle circulation problems to include tracking down lost and missing material
  • Handle patrons' complaints and problematic accounts
  • Check and respond to "hold" requests
  • Oversee the operation and use of photocopiers, add-value machine and refunds related to the operation of these machines
  • Oversee the neatness and furniture arrangements in the library
  • Work in cooperation with reference and interlibrary loan departments
  • Provide directional information to patrons (maps, events, )
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

 Supervisory responsibilities:

 Responsible for overseeing the work performed by student  assistants in the circulation department, the security desk and at the computer lab.

 
   

 Education and experience requirements:

Bachelor's degree (with library work experience preferred)

Excellent customer service and communication skills

Excellent organizational  skills

Must be reliable and punctual

Computer literacy

Disposition to work cooperatively with the staff of other library departments

 

Working  conditions:

Part-time hourly position.  Must be able to work flexible hours since the scheduled hours may fluctuate.  Evening and weekend hours required.  Some bending, lifting, stooping required in an office environment.  When opening the library, the Circulation Desk Supervisor is to report to  work 15 minutes before the library doors are open to the public.
