Director of Planned Giving


The University of St. Thomas (UST), a private Catholic University committed to the liberal arts and the religious and intellectual tradition of Catholic higher education, located in Houston, Texas, near the vibrant central business district, Texas Medical Center, and museum district, is seeking applicants for a full-time Director of Planned Giving. This position is within the University Advancement Office and reports directly to the Senior Director of Development.

Summary:

The Director of Planned Giving is a member of the Development Team responsible for the overall planned giving fundraising plan for the University. This includes the establishment and implementation of planned giving strategic plans, policies, and goals.


Responsibilities will include:

  • Developing strategies for the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of planned giving prospects, maintaining an active portfolio of (75-120) prospective major and planned giving donors
  • Partnering with the Chief Development Officer and Senior Director of Development to integrate planned giving activities into fundraising efforts
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of planned giving initiatives and activities
  • Mentoring staff and facilitating/providing planned giving training as necessary
  • Developing strategies to aggressively market the planned giving program
  • Leading the evolvement of the Lillian and Stella Scanlan Society (the University's recognition society for alumni and friends with confirmed planned gifts) and, with the Director of Stewardship and Annual Giving, the stewardship of its members
  • Managing the Planned Giving Advisory Committee with estate attorneys, financial/estate planners, etc. and overseeing effective meetings
  • Collaborate with Advancement Services colleagues to ensure the proper tracking and reporting of planned giving commitments and activities
  • Coordinating with University leadership, primarily Chief Legal Counsel and Vice President for Finance and Business Affairs, around the acceptance of planned gifts
  • Potentially serving as a development liaison to an academic school or center

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • An undergraduate degree required. A Master's Degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in a Director of Planned Giving position or in a field related to estate and/or gift planning.
  • Experience in an institution of higher education would be preferred.
  • Legal and/or financial training related to estate planning preferred.
  • Demonstrated high level of proficiency in computer skills with an emphasis on Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated excellent communications skills both verbal and in writing.
  • Demonstrated skills and abilities to make effective presentations to groups of various sizes.
  • Effective organization skills and abilities to multi-task are critical elements of the position.
