Financial Aid Counselor

The University of St. Thomas (UST), a private Catholic University committed to the liberal arts and the religious and intellectual tradition of Catholic higher education, located in Houston, Texas, near the vibrant central business district, Texas Medical Center, and museum district, is seeking applicants for a full-time Financial Aid Counselor position. This position reports directly to the Dean of Scholarships and Financial Aid.

Summary:

Advise students and families regarding availability of scholarships and financial aid at the university.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

Counsel students and their families regarding financial aid eligibility, assistance programs available, and their rights and responsibilities associated with those programs

  1. Certify private loans, and manage disbursements.
  2. Assist with federal verification process
  3. Utilize & process professional judgment to evaluate changed circumstances
  4. Assist with the distribution of information on various financial aid programs available to students; conduct financial aid presentations on campus and in the community
  5. Process and compile missing information letters to students with incomplete files
  6. Provide support to the other financial aid professionals and promote a cross-trained student-centered atmosphere
  7. Work cooperatively with other university offices to efficiently and effectively meet the needs of students and families
  8. Work with other professional staff in counseling students and applicants with the financial aid process
  9. Perform other various duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Requirement:

Minimum of Bachelor's Degree is required

  1. Minimum of 2 years prior financial aid work experience at the college/university level
  2. Working knowledge of the financial aid application process and various federal and state financial aid programs.
  3. Familiarity of current issues effecting the financial aid and scholarship profession
  4. Demonstrate a high level of mathematical aptitude and ability
  5. Demonstrate a customer service orientation and effective public relations skills
  6. An intermediate or higher proficiency level in desktop skills specifically Excel, Word, and PowerPoint software.
  7. Effective organization skills and the ability to multi-task.
  8. Professional telephone skills to handle a high volume of telephone and electronic interaction with others.

Working conditions:

May occasionally be required to work weekend/evening hours (during peak periods).

  1. When workload demands, individuals will be expected to work the necessary hours to get the job done.
  2. Physical capabilities for normal office environment required.
  3. Very limited travel.
  4. Non-smoking environment
